About

My name is Natalie Kay & I’m a product designer.

I have always had a passion for art & understanding the process of creation itself. I graduated cum laude from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts concentrating in graphic design & printmaking. I own a small business called Off the Beaten Press, teach classes at a local art center & work full time as a lead product designer on a growing experience design team.

Whether I am producing my own work, teaching others how to create or conducting research for my full time job, I find I am always refining the process. Art was my initial passport into the human-centered design world that I am now surrounded by. I am constantly growing based on how technology shifts around me, skills I am learning, and the feedback I receive from others. I hope I am never done.

Work Experience

  • Lead Product Designer | 2021-Present
    Product team Search & Finance

    • Continued to enhanced search through progressive updates including subtractive filters, global search & new refinements.

    • Designed & optimized a product that allowed customers to “shop with your financing terms.” Compared to traditional search, using this experience created a 1.5% lift in sales.

    • Operated as lead program designer over SEO & Finance.

    • Worked with our internal design system team to foster and grow a shared component library.

    • Used an internal hack day to kick of launching a redesigned compare experience. Increased cars compared by 81% and car reservation rate of tool users by 15%.

    Senior Product Designer | 2019-2021 Product team Search

    • Designer of the search page experience & how it connects to the rest of the car buying journey.

    • Partnered with other designers to create a new onboarding tools.

    • Conducted an initial audit & competitor analysis of the search page and translated findings into small experiments and feature work.

    • Kicked off the creation of the CarMax chat bot team by leading initial experiments, setting up the structure for the principles and defining the bot’s personality & brand.

    • Built the foundation of a new vehicle details page to specifically support Google Ad traffic.

    • Worked with my core team to form & prioritize OKRs and present recommendations back to stakeholders.

  • Senior Product Designer | 2017-2019

    • Worked on the internal lab team to redesign a stand alone marketplace product that allowed businesses to request single shifts from hourly workers & workers to pick them up.

    • Translated discovery & testing findings into prototypes and fully executed interface designs. Visualized user flows through wireframes and journey maps. Conducted research & usability tests.

    • Led weekly internal stakeholder sessions to collect feedback and discuss status updates of product improvements.


    Product Designer | 2014-2017


    • Partnered with researchers, product managers & front end developers as part of multiple core teams including an e-commerce product, scheduling app & employer management tool

    • Created guidelines and establish a holistic living style guide that reflected brand standards & promoted best practices

    • Supported product marketing efforts

  • Designer, Salem Church Products | May 2011-August 2014

    Served as lead web designer for Salem Church Product Division’s 12 Brands. Responsible for designing & updating websites, creating & coding emails, as well as producing print & web marketing.

  • Graphic Designer | 2010-2011

    Designed & coded websites for clients like the American Society of Microbiology, the US Department of Health and Human Services, Geoffrey Beene Gives Back, and the American Heart Association.

  • Off the Beaten Press
    Owner | 2014-Present
    Operate a small design studio specializing in letterpressed paper goods, calligraphy, & illustrated keepsakes.
